Firm creates sneakers using recycled chewing gum

Amsterdam has taken an initiative to keep its streets gum-free by rolling out pair of sneakers whose soles are made

Amsterdam has taken an initiative to keep its streets gum-free by rolling out pair of sneakers whose soles are made from recycled gums from the streets.

Who would have imagined that the gum stuck on the streets that one avoided to get stuck on would end up being the soles of their shoes. This new invention is by a local shoe label ‘Explicit Gear’ along with marketing firm ‘Iamsterdam’ and sustainability firm ‘Gumdrop’, which is responsible for recycling gum waste.

The shoes will be available from June and will cost $232. The sneakers called ‘Gumshoe’ aim to create awareness among the people to keep the city clean. “In the Netherlands, 1.5 million kilograms of gum ends up on the street every year, making it the second most common litter after cigarettes,” reads the product’s official website.

You can now order from Pizza Hut with new pizza-ordering sneakers

According to Fortune, the color of the sole not only resembles a chewing gum’s popular color pink, but also smells like one. The sole also features a map of the city.

Every 2.2 pounds of collected gum can be used to make soles of four pairs of sneakers, Gumdrop claims. The company travels around Amsterdam in order to collect discarded gum.

The creators wish to expand their product to other metropolitan cities in order to introduce an easier way to keep the streets from polluting with chewing gum waste. The shoes are already available online for pre-orders.
