The federal capital witnessed over 13.88 percent rise in overall crime rate in 2013 compared to 2012 and there is no let up in the crime rate in 2014, it is learnt. A senior police officer who declined to be named told Business Recorder on Wednesday that 8,094 cases of various nature involving persons and property were registered in 2013 - a sharp increase in crimes as there were a total of 7,107 registered cases in 2012.
He said the rising crime trend in federal capital was sustained in 2014 and robbers, auto thieves and abductors were operating in broad daylight - a reflection of the failure of the city's managers.
He further stated the city police registered 1,172 cases of crime in 2013 as compared 1,030 cases in 2012, an increase of 13.7 percent. According to him, crime against property recorded an increase of 41.4 percent in 2013, and the city police registered 2,514 cases of crime against property in 2013 as opposed to 1,777 cases in 2012. He said city police registered 11 cases of kidnapping for ransom in 2013, while there were only three cases reported in 2012. The city police registered 22 cases of rape in 2013 and 16 in 2012. As many as 131 cases of murder were reported in 2013, while in 2013 the number rose to 120.
Since the PML-N government took over in June last year, two major terror attacks occurred in federal capital, of which one was foiled after a guard managed to kill the suicide bomber at an Imambargah in Bara Kahu in the suburbs of Islamabad in August last year. The terror attack on March 3, however, killed 11 and injured 29 when around six terrorists stormed a court complex in F-8 and opened indiscriminate fire, hurled grenades on lawyers and litigants and then blew themselves up. Nasiruddin Haqqani, the eldest son of Jalauddin Haqqani of Haqqani Network, was also gunned down by unidentified persons on November 11, 2013 in the vicinity of Bara Kahu police station.
