Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) should try to mitigate the many problems faced by exporters instead of focusing on marketing.
Patron-in-Chief, Pakistan Bead Wear Exporters Association (PBEA), Shabir Ahmed talking to Business Recorder here on Tuesday welcomed the appointment of S M Muneer as Chief Executive of TDAP, and expressed the hope that he would put his best foot forward in restoring the lost image of the Authority and ensure that exporters were free from the hassle of chasing government departments in overcoming their problems so that they were able to concentrate on selling more and better, diversify markets and products and establish Pakistan as a supplier of choice.
TDAP should focus on high production costs, whether on account of supply of power or gas, or cost of doing business or unhelpful police, he said. Shabir said S M Muneer was a highly respected businessman of Pakistan whose contributions in the fields of exports, manufacturing and finance were widely recognised. Committed to the cause of Pakistan, he has represented the country at various international fora with great distinction.
In view of his vast experience, "we are confident TDAP will now be put on the right track and hope that the wasteful expenditure of TDAP, whether pointless trips abroad or unnecessary administrative expenses would be checked and its resources diverted to genuine export development and promotion," he said.
Shabir regretted that over the past few years, TDAP had failed to achieve desired results. It was not fully responsive to exporters' needs and aspirations and did not act as the 'home' of exporters, serving as a bridge between the government and the exporting community, as it used to in the past. "We hope the new Chief Executive will reconstruct this bridge and ensure that the government responded efficaciously to genuine grievances of the exporting community, from unfairly withheld refunds to wastage of Export Development Fund (EDF) to proper policy formulation."
