The Supreme Court Thursday issued a freeze order on the bank accounts of Defence Housing Authority (DHA) in twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad for its failure to deposit Rs 22 billion with the Registrar's office in pursuance of court's earlier orders over alleged corruption of Rs 40 billion in the Employees' Old-Age Benefit Institution (EOBI).
On Thursday, Supreme Court accepted the plea of Defence Housing Authority (DHA) to release Rs 52 million for salaries from the Authority's frozen bank accounts in twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad upon its failure to deposit Rs 22 billion with the Registrar's office.
Resuming the hearing of the alleged scam, a three-judge bench of Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali observed that the accounts payable should be settled mutually by the companies and the EOBI otherwise the court would proceed in the matter in accordance with law. A member of the bench, Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, said that those companies, which agreed to pay back the amount against the purchased properties could be exempted and hinted at initiating fraud proceedings against the rest in the matter. During the proceedings, former DG Planning DHA Colonel Tariq (Retd) contended that he was behind unearthing the current "scam" and sought permission to submit a proof. The bench observed that day-to-day hearings would be conducted before it adjourned the hearing of case till April 9.
