Secretary General Jamaat-e-Islami Liaqat Baloch has said the meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and former President Zardari could be a message to the armed forces; and it could also be a part of the NRO deal. Commenting on the meetings between the two sides, he said in a statement that contacts between political parties were not undesirable; however, secret contacts between the PML (N) and the PPP came to light on some occasions.
He said the PML (N) and the PPP actually wanted to maintain a status quo, and might have met to reaffirm their stance in this respect. Baloch stressed that the democratic process must continue at all costs while the armed forces had no right to take any supra-constitutional step. He said all the political forces stood united for the protection of a democratic system. He said the JI would continue its efforts towards the protection of democracy, the supremacy of constitution and the enforcement of an Islamic order in the country. However, he said, the political parties coming into power in the name of democracy were themselves responsible for the weaknesses of democracy because when in power they simply protected the interests of the elite class while the poor masses were deprived of even their right to live.
Baloch said that in order to strengthen the democratic order the elected governments must comply with the constitution, accept the supremacy of the judiciary and implement its decisions, abolish corruption and adopt concrete measures for a just distribution of resources of the country among all sections of society.
