Site Association of Industry (SAI) and Traffic police have lunched a traffic management plan in Site industrial area to check traffic rules violations and make drivers to fallow tariff rules for ensuring smooth flow of traffic. Chairman SAI Younus M Bashir said that under the plan traffic police instead of imposing fine on the violators will impound their vehicles for three days on first violation.
He said that in case the same driver violate traffic rule second time, then the tariff police would impound his vehicle for 15 days. He said that imposing fine for traffic rules violation has failed to curb violations and expressed hope that the new plan will help in controlling and managing smooth flow of traffic and force drivers to fallow tariff rules.
It has become a normal practice for the drivers of cars, rickshaws, motorcycles, trucks etc to break the one-way traffic rule by plying their vehicles on the wrong side of the road thus creating a traffic hazard. It is being done by them to avoid travelling only a little distance and crossing to the right lane through intersections. They do not care tariff lights and cross the road when the tariff light is red.
Bus drivers usually resort to reckless driving, which causes accidents. The rickshaw and motorcycle rickshaw drivers also do not care much about traffic rules and have become a major reason of traffic jams and accidents. According to rough estimates, there are about three million vehicles in Karachi and the number is increasing at an annual rate of 8 percent.
