Women artists have been involved in making art in most times and places around the world. The women artists through the centuries faced challenges due to gender biases in the mainstream fine art world. They have often encountered difficulties in training, travelling and trading their work, and gaining recognition.
Ana Molka Ahmed, Zubeida Javed, Laila Shahzada, Lubna Agha, Musarrat Mirza and Naheed Raza are a few women painters who open new vistas in the painting scene of our country and pave the way for future women artists.
Depicting beauty of nature in landscapes to female figures portraying agony and pain, hope and joy - the show covers all the subjects that touch the hearts of artists as women and artists alike. The recent group exhibition at Citi Art Gallery, Karachi comprises paintings by the women artists in various mediums and tackles diverse themes thus presenting fusion of contemporary art.
The main focus of the paintings is the themes related to women and society. As artists are the sensitive parts of the society who use the medium of art to express themselves emotionally these women artist do the same representing other women of society.
Each of the artists made her presence felt and play role in spreading awareness among women as well as community. The collection of paintings is both delightful and thought provoking. Some paintings have light mood while the others deals with serious subjects.
The introspective artworks created by the artists delineate many unspoken issues that need attention and recognise as a serious problem rather than a norm for the society.
Some paintings are focused on the relationship between the social environment and the self through symbolic imagery and artistic demonstration. While the impressionistic strokes of some artists create a mystery, through form and expression, leaving a lot to the imagination of the viewer.
The figurative works speaks about life fill with movement and colours. The bold and soft texture depicts different facets of life.
Painting for these women is a passion, a medium best suited to express their inner self which transforms their experiences and feelings on canvas through a medium. The fleeting effects of forms and their expressions is a challenge for them in this dual standard world.
The approach of women artists to women form is raw and visceral, suggesting violent and pleasant experiences and lending the work powerful emotional and political overtones. The ability of women artists to visualise very succinctly the entire composition of their paintings to the minute details with humans, objects, shapes, colours, and abstract formations was incredible.
These crystallized thoughts of artists are transcribed with immense skill on canvas and paper. Interestingly, the themes for their paintings are derived from the circumstances or events that have happened or are likely to occur therefore the paintings involve each viewer in mysterious ways.
Some of the artists enjoys creating mind-tapping images while others reflects their thoughts behind their pieces but each artist masterly execute their work through intricate and detailed powerful compositions.
The works on display showed that the art is an experience of forms and ideas. An amalgamation of traditional art and artist's imagination the paintings speak for themselves. The artists really showed skills in term of concept execution while the basic contents were serious and near real life.
All the women artists produced the finest paintings of true art that are neither repetitive nor decorative and each piece is a marvel of creative intelligence. But Rabia Dawood's contemporary approach and style is outstanding in all works at the exhibition, she reflects her own style through her paintings which is intuitive and an elemental passion. Some of the artists displayed their artworks first time at a private gallery and the credit goes to the gallery.
