The Supreme Court on Thursday restored National Assembly membership of Sultan Mehmood Hanjra who belongs to the ruling Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N). A two-member bench of the apex court headed by chief Justice Nasir-ul-Mulk heard a writ petition filed by Sultan Mehmood Hanjra, challenging the verdict of Election Tribunal which disqualified him from NA-176 National Assembly membership.
Besides restoring his National Assembly membership, the court also suspended the order passed by the Election Tribunal according to which Hanjra stood disqualified. The apex court also called off re-polling in the constituency. Earlier, an Election tribunal disqualified Sultan Mehmood Hanjra and ordered re-polling in NA 176 constituency in response to a petition filed by former Punjab governor Ghulam Mustafa Khar against him.
Ghulam Mustafa Khar stated that according to Articles 62 and 63 of the constitution, Sultan Mehmood Hanjra was not Sadiq and Ameen person as he kept secret some facts, and did not mention those in his nomination papers. Meanwhile, a writ petition challenging an election tribunal's verdict that declared the election results of the PS-114 constituency in Karachi null and void was filed in the Supreme Court on Thursday.
The petition was filed by Irfanullah Marwat of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) who won the seat. The Muttahida Qaumi Movement's (MQM) Abdur Rauf Siddiqui was the runner-up in the election. He had accused the winning candidate of rigging and filed a petition in the tribunal against him. The election tribunal nullified the results and ordered re-polling in the constituency located in Karachi's Mehmoodabad area on the basis of a Nadra's report.
