Soon in 2019 we might get a chance to ditch our usual homes and live in 3D-printed houses instead, thanks to a company in The Netherlands.

A firm known as Van Wijnen is working with the city of Eindhoven in Netherlands in building the world’s first community of 3D-printed houses, called Project Milestone, which will probably be ready by next year.

The community is planned to contain five houses that will be printed with concrete. Each following house will be built on the ones that were made before it. The first house will be a single-storey containing three rooms and measuring 1,000sq ft whereas, the other four will be multi-storey.

The houses will be printed off-site initially and then will be brought to the final location in the Meerhoven district of Eindhoven. The aim for building these houses is to make futuristic-looking houses a work of art in and of themselves, so the final community looks like a kind of sculpture garden, reported Engadget.

The Guardian explains that Van Wijnen want to make these houses for more than one reason. Firstly, since there is a shortage of bricklayers in The Netherlands, craft has become more expansive as compared to concrete which is cheap and versatile. Also, 3D printing is more economical since no material goes to waste. The method of 3D printing also permits printing of various kinds if concrete at once. Moreover, it can also be easily customized as per people’s wishes.

“We like the look of the houses at the moment as this is an innovation and it is a very futuristic design. But we are already looking to a take a step further and people will be able to design their own homes and then print them out. People will be able to make their homes suit them, personalize them, and make them more aesthetically pleasing,” said Rudy van Gurp, the company’s manager.

If this project becomes successful, more 3D-printed houses will follow in the future. The first home for this project will be ready by sometime in 2019, as the homes are currently being printed off-site. The cost is, however, still not known, reported Mirror.
