The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has launched a month-long special campaign for the eradication of dengue and Congo virus following concerns shown by former President Asif Ali Zardari regarding rapid spread of the lethal viruses in the city. Sources said that Zardari had expressed serious concerns over the pathetic cleanliness conditions in the city during a meeting with the provincial lawmakers.
They said that the KMC had decided to take necessary precautionary measures including city-wide daily fumigation and use of guppy fishes in the ponds, pools and drains to control mosquitoes. In this regard, KMC Administrator Rauf Akhtar Farooqui opened the campaign on Tuesday in Saddar. Earlier, speaking at a meeting of the health and municipal services department, he said that KMC was launching a month-long campaign for the eradication of dengue, Congo and other viruses. The Administrator said that the city's densely populated and katchi abadies would be focused during the drive. He said that the former President had taken notice of the situation; therefore, immediate measures should be taken to control spread of the lethal diseases in the city.
