Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances, headed by former Supreme Court Judge Justice Javed Iqbal, disposed of 12 cases of missing persons in August 2014. According to a press release issued on Thursday, on January 1, 2011, 138 cases of missing persons were pending. During the period of January 1, 2011 to August 31, 2014, the Commission received 2,069 new cases, thus enhancing the total number of cases to 2,207 out of which 763 cases have been disposed of and the current balance of the pending cases is 1,444.
The Commission could not hold hearings of the cases last month as per original schedule as officers of law enforcement agencies, especially the ICT and Punjab Police were very busy in connection with maintenance of law and order, the press release said. The Commission has fixed hearings in 111 cases of alleged enforced disappearances at Karachi from September 15-20 and another 62 cases at Lahore from September 22-27.
