Don't waste any time if you happen to spill a beverage - whether it's coffee, water or something else - onto your keyboard. Detach your PC's keyboard from the computer immediately to cut off its power, advises German computer magazine Chip.
If a large volume flooded the keyboard, turn it upside down to get out as much as possible. However, if only a small amount washed over the keyboard, then move the device as little as possible.
Next, experts recommend using a knife or screwdriver to gently get all the individual keys out so you can dry off the interior with a cotton swab or paper towel. Once that's done, leave the keyboard in a well-ventilated area for a longer period.
If the liquid worked its way well into the keyboard, the device should get at least 24 hours to dry out.
You can speed up the process with a hairdryer, but make sure not to let the dryer get too close to the keyboard.
Things are more complicated if you doused a laptop. The initial steps remain the same. Turn it off immediately, unplug it and remove the battery if it can be taken out. Move the laptop as little as possible.
