250 cops lost their lives in Karachi operation: terrorists better equipped than police: Sindh IGP
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Sindh, Ghulam Haider Jamali, said on Saturday that 250 policemen had lost their lives in the Karachi operation. The Sindh IGP said that there was a terrorist threat in Karachi and police needed bombproof vehicles. At a press conference, Jamali said the government was helping the police which aimed to establish peace in Karachi.
According to the Sindh IGP, terrorists were better equipped than the police while a crackdown continued against criminals in the city. Ghulam Haider Jamali admitted that Karachi faced a serious threat from militants hiding in the Karachi city. "What is of concern is that these terrorists have more sophisticated weapons and advanced tracking devices and skills compared to our police force," he said.
Sindh IGP Jamali said that militants were well-trained in making explosives and devices. "This is one reason that ever since the operation was started against militants and criminals in Karachi in the last one year around 250 policemen and officers have been martyred in operations, target killings and explosions," he said. His comments came two days after a bomb blast targeted a senior police official involved in the Karachi operation against terrorists. SSP Farooq Awan survived the attack in the Defence Housing Authority, a posh area of the city, but two civilians were killed in the blast.
This year two other senior police officials involved in operations have been killed by militants. Chaudhry Aslam was killed in a bomb blast while Shafiq Tanoli was targeted in a bomb attack. In the wake of the threats to the lives of policemen, the IGP of Sindh said there was a need for the government to provide advanced weapons, armoured cars and bomb-proof vehicles to take on the terrorists, criminals, target killers, extortionists and kidnappers.
