Federal Bureau of Revenue's Directorate of Intelligence and Investigation (DGI&I), Karachi, on Saturday, claimed to have confiscated a consignment of smuggled light-emitting diode (LED) televisions from Pakistan International Cargo (PIC). According to officials, the action was taken on a tipoff that some unscrupulous persons, who brought a consignment of smuggled LED TVs to Lahore from Afghanistan, were planning to re-transport it to Karachi through PIC, located at West-Wharf area.
Reacting on the information, an intelligence team raided the PIC and seized the Malaysian-made LED TVs as the concerned people failed to produce their import documents. Officials said that no arrest was made in this connection because they are more interested in collecting customs duty and other fees from the importers of such TVs. The officials said that following seizure of 45 LED TVs of different brands worth around Rs 1.83 million, legal proceedings against the responsible people had been initiated.
