A fire which broke out at a storage deposit site at the Milazzo refinery on the Italian island of Sicily in the early hours of Saturday morning had been brought under control, police and fire-fighters said. A spokesman for the fire brigade in the nearby city of Messina said the fire had begun in fuel storage tank 513 at the refinery some time before 1 am(2300 GMT).
The spokesman said there had been no serious damage from the fire, adding the flames had already been extinguished. Local press reports earlier said the blaze at the refinery had sent flames into the night sky, causing traffic jams as scared residents fled their homes. In a statement, Italian oil sector association Federpetroli said it had been informed by authorities in Milazzo and Messina that no-one had been injured in the fire, adding there was no threat to the environment.
