On the joint invitation extended to Pakistan by the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, the President of the European Council of Ministers Herman Van Rompuy, and the President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, Syed Tariq Fatemi, will lead the Pakistan delegation to the 10th ASEM Summit, to be held in Milan, Italy on October 16-17, 2014.
The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) is a bi-regional dialogue forum which promotes inter-regional harmony and co-operation in the common interest of its members. It comprises 49 countries of Asia and Europe and two organisations - the European Union and the ASEAN. The Summits are held biennially with the Foreign Ministers' meetings in the intervening year.
ASEM activities are held under its three main pillars: political, economic and cultural/ intellectual. Pakistan joined ASEM in 2006 and actively participates in its numerous activities at various levels. The 10th ASEM Summit will provide a useful opportunity to discuss common political and security issues of regional and global significance. It will also deliberate upon ways to foster organisational linkages and people-to-people contacts to make ASEM more relevant to the common people. Under the overall framework of ASEM Summit, various events have been organised that include the 8th Asia-Europe Parliamentary Partnership (ASEP) on October 6-7, 10th Asia-Europe People's Forum (AEPF) on October 10-12 and 9th Asia-Europe Business Forum (AEBF) on October 15-17, 2014. On the margins of the 10th ASEM Summit, Fatemi will also hold bilateral meetings with other participating heads of delegations.-PR
