The UN Secretary General's Special Representative (SRSG) for Afghanistan Jan Kubis called on the Adviser to the Prime Minister on Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi on Monday. The discussions focused on recent developments in Afghanistan and in Pakistan-Afghanistan relations.
During the meetings, Pakistan's support for a peaceful, stable, united and prosperous Afghanistan was reaffirmed. The Special Representative was apprised of the Adviser's recent visit to Kabul and his talks with the new Afghan leadership, during which Pakistan's resolve to open a new chapter in bilateral relations was conveyed. The SRSG was told that consistent with the Prime Minister's vision of a "peaceful neighbourhood", Pakistan was engaging with Afghanistan across a broad range of issues - including peace and security, trade and economic ties, reconstruction and rehabilitation, and regional co-operation. Pakistan's support for UNAMA in dealing with issues post-2014 was also reiterated.
Jan Kubis acknowledged Pakistan's important contribution towards peace and stability and deeper engagement on issues of trade and economic co-operation with Afghanistan. He briefed the Adviser and the SAPM on UNAMA's ongoing efforts in support of Afghanistan's peace and development. He further affirmed UN's commitment for continued engagement and consultations with Pakistan on all relevant issues, including economic development and refugee repatriation.
The Adviser and SAPM lauded the contribution of Special Representative Jan Kubis to Afghanistan's development and progress during his term and felicitated Deputy SRSG Nicholas Haysom on his appointment as the next SRSG. Haysom accompanied Special Representative Kubis during the visit. Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry was also present on the occasion.-PR
