Former information and broadcasting minister Qamar Zaman Kaira has stressed the need for early completion of Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline project. "Had there been other option to meet Pakistan's energy requirements other than the IP pipeline, the Pakistan's People Party government would have surely chosen that; hence, IP gas project is the best option for Pakistan to meet its energy needs," Kaira told an Iranian news agency.
He said that the former Pakistani government had signed a contract with Tehran to import gas and the current government should work on the implementation of the project. He said that Pakistan had not stopped work on the project and there was already some progress made. Iran wants to export its natural gas to Pakistan, India and China through the pipeline project. Iran has already built its 900-kilometer share of the pipeline on its side and is waiting for the 700-kilometer Pakistani side of the pipeline to be built.
