The 33rd Punjab Amateur Golf Championship will be contested over three days starting from Friday (today) here at the Royal Palm Golf Course. This was stated by Omer Mir, General Manager, Royal Palm in a press conference at the Royal Palm Golf Club. Colonel Jameel Khalid (retired), Director Golf, Khawaja Pervaiz Saeed, Director Media and Syed Muhammed Salman of Coca Cola, the sponsors of the prestigious championship were also present.
Omer Mir further stated that this event is an annual feature of the national golf calendar and will be the 33rd Punjab Amateur Golf Championship in succession. Colonel Jameel Khalid (retired) said that a total of 140 golfers are competing in the competition and he further added that the arena has been prepared well to suit the occasion. Some of the notable players particularly from other cities have already gone through practice rounds and are full of praise for the challenges of the course and the playing conditions.
He further stated that amateurs with a handicap of 9 and below are eligible to participate. The contest will span over three days and each day 18 holes will be played adding up to a total of 54 holes. The champion will be one with the best gross score and there is also an event for the senior amateurs over 55 years of age.
In the event for seniors, golfers with a handicap of 14 and below are eligible to compete. The contest for seniors will be over 18 holes and will be held on 9th November. As for ladies, eligibility criteria is that they must have a handicap of 24 and below. The ladies contest will be over 36 holes, which is two rounds and will take place on 7th and 8th November. Royal Palm Golf Course is 6,820 yards long, has a par of 72 and it is the first golf course which has been built to the Unites States Golf Association standards.
