S.Korea thrash Germany’s World Cup dream

The Defending Champions Germany are out of the FIFA World Cup 2018 after suffering a shocking 2-0 defeat against South Korea on Wednesday.

It was a do or die contest for both side as Germany needing a win to progress to Last 16 while South Korea were relying on the outcome of Mexico and Sweden.

However, despite the shocking outcome of the game, both Germany and South Korea will be heading back home, as Sweden defeated Mexico to book their place in last 16 along with Mexican side.

South Korea's Kim Young-gwon scored in added time following a video review and Son Heung-min added another goal just before the final whistle.

The four-time winners, who had not been eliminated in a World Cup first round since 1938, were a shadow of their once dominant selves, managing only two goals in their three group games.

South Korea, also eliminated, had the best early chance of the game when Germany keeper Manuel Neuer spilled a free kick in the 19th minute but managed to recover quickly and slap the ball away.

Nervous Germany increased the pressure after the break and poured forward but despite a one-sided second half they could not find the back of the net before South Korea's last-gasp double.

Germany started their title defense against Mexico. The outcome of the game was not pleasing as they lost the match 1-0. This was their first ever defeat in the opening game of the tournament since 1982.

In the second group game against Sweden, which was also a do or die contest for the champions, the German side managed to secure all three points thanks to stoppage time strike from Toni Kroos.
