Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah said that Pakistan People's Party (PPP) would support Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) if the latter approached Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) to remove the members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
"The members of the Commission should have resigned on their own after the controversy of vote rigging in the elections 2013. We have already made a demand of their resignations, they should go home and do not destroy the Commission further. The PPP would support Imran Khan if he files a reference in Supreme Judicial Council against the members of the Commission to remove them," the Opposition Leader said while addressing a news conference on Tuesday.
He said the Chief Election Commissioner has no power to remove the members of the Commission. "We will make a legislation to enhance the scope of the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner and the members of the Commission including senior lawyers, bureaucrats and others. Parliamentary Committee on election reforms is working in this regard," he said.
Answering a question, the Opposition Leader said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif should take an initiative and resume talks with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). He said that the Prime Minister should take all political parties into confidence in this regard. "I am also ready to play the role of a mediator to resume the talks with PTI to end the current stalemate. There are no other options to resolve this issue except negotiations. We are no supporters of PML-N government but we want to support democratic system and Parliament," he reiterated his party's stance.
Answering another question, he said that protest was right of every party; PTI could peacefully protest in every party of the country including Karachi. He said that his party would not allow any party to damage public property. "The PML-N government has to show tolerance. There will be a civil war if workers of both parties [PTI and PML-N] come face to face again. The Prime Minister is in favour of talks but I think that his team is not obeying his order or it has no vision. There are some people in his team who are playing the role of the 'Elephants of King Porous' and 'a snake in grass'. The Opposition always wants to provoke the government," he said. Answering yet another question, Shah said, "Mian Nawaz Shairf is making Imran Kahn a leader while he [Imran] is already moving towards disaster. Neither Imran nor Nawaz Saharif can get anything from this fight." He said that the tenure of the Parliament should be curtailed to four years, "which is favourable for the PML-N government for smooth sailing." The Opposition Leader strongly condemned the Faisalabad incident in which a worker of PTI was killed.
