The UN General Assembly on Wednesday granted observer status to the Developing Eight Countries Organisation for Economic Co-operation, known as D-8, when it adopted a Pakistan-sponsored resolution. The resolution, which was cleared by the Assembly's Legal Committee in October, also received unanimous approval in the 193-member body.
Established in 1997, the D-8 members include Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey. After the General Assembly's action, Pakistan UN Ambassador Masood Khan said he was grateful to all member states for unanimously adopting the text.
"The D-8's goals include promotion of its member states role in the global economy, creation of new opportunities in their trade relations and improvement in standard of living of its peoples," he said. Masood Khan said the objectives of the D-8 were synergistic with the objectives of the United Nations. Such observer status would help the Organisation further its goals as well as developing synergies with the United Nations' socio-economic and sustainable development objectives.
