"The on-going deteriorating law and order situation necessitated the need of implementation of effective gender based police reforms aimed at ensuring provision of level playing field to women police as well as effective representation within the police department. The women police should be properly represented within the police department, not only in strength, but also empower them so that they could perform their duties independently in the field," said Gulmina Bilal, Executive Director Individualland Pakistan (IL-Pakistan).
IL-Pakistan a research based consultancy firm has been involved with advocacy of police reforms and capacity building of police since 2007, while the organisation has been specifically engaged with women police gender based police reforms since 2011. She said that there is a need to engage the legislature, government functionaries, police department and civil society groups in playing their roles for implementing gender based police reforms.
Gulmina said that women police will play their due role when they will be given an opportunity to work independently as well as concerned authorities need to address the challenges and problems facing them within the police department. She said that IL-Pakistan has embarked on an initiative titled "Civil Society and Police Reforms in South Asia" in this regard. IL Pakistan has conducted talk shows, inviting the most relevant personalities to discuss the present status of women police and how to improve the situation, she said.-PR
