An accountability court on Monday rejected the acquittal plea of former President Asif Ali Zardari in two references filed against him by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in 1997. An accountability court Judge, Muhammad Bashir, while hearing the corruption cases filed by NAB against Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari, rejected Zardari's request seeking acquittal in the SGS and the Cotecna references.
During the course of hearing, it was remarked that some evidence exists in these references due to which acquittal verdict could not be issued. The court summoned witnesses and adjourned hearing till January 8. The same court on May 28 had acquitted Asif Ali Zardari in the Polo Ground reference and acquitted former president in two more corruption the Ursus tractors and the ARY Gold references on December 12, 2014.
The accountability court reopened NAB references against former President Asif Ali Zardari on October 11, 2013 and issued a notice to him to appear before the court. The references against former President were adjourned when he was elected as President of Pakistan due to constitutional immunity. Former president Pervez Musharraf had withdrawn all cases against Zardari under the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) in 2007. The Supreme Court had later annulled the NRO and reopened all corruption cases against Zardari.
