It's generally a good thing for a computer to go into sleep mode if it's not used for a certain amount of time, because you reduce energy use and fan wear. But sometimes, powering down will mar vital operations like virus scans, downloads or data backups.
In Windows 8, this can be averted by opening "Change PC Settings," and going to Power & Sleep, which sets the options for turning the screen off and when the PC should go to sleep. By changing the intervals to "Never," you should be able to keep the device awake.
To be extra sure that a computer won't fall asleep during vital functions, there's a free programme one can download: Don't Sleep.
It can be used to block a computer from going to sleep or into standby for a specific period. It can also be used to deactivate the screen saver for a period of time.
