The Pakistan-US Working Group on Law Enforcement and Counter-Terrorism Monday held a useful and wide-ranging discussion on various US-Pakistan areas of co-operation. The discussions held in a cordial atmosphere were related to law-enforcement and counter terrorism, cross border militancy, countering terrorist financing, counter-narcotics, border management and counter-IEDs.
The Pakistan side was co-chaired by the Foreign Secretary, Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry and Secretary Interior, Shahid Khan, while the US side was led by US National Co-ordinator for Counterterrorism Ambassador Tina Kaidanow. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Dan Feldman and National Security Council Senior Director Jeff Eggers, National Co-ordinator for NACTA Hamid Ali Khan and other senior officials from US and Pakistan also participated in the working group.
The Working Group meeting provided an opportunity to the Pakistan side to apprise the US side of the comprehensive counter-terrorism strategy being pursued by the law enforcement authorities in the wake of Peshawar massacre. The Government has evolved a robust National Action Plan backed by a national political consensus to eliminate the menace of terrorism. The US side appreciated the efforts of the Government of Pakistan, in the wake of tragic Peshawar school incident and offered to extend co-operation to fight terrorism. The Working Group identified avenues for further co-operation in law enforcement and countering terrorism. The two sides agreed to continue their work and build on commonly agreed areas in the coming months.-PR
