Juncker says eurozone doesn't back Greek demands

European Commission chief Jean-Claude Juncker on Monday warned the left-wing Greek government not to expect the eurozone to quickly agree to its demands to renegotiate its bailout programme. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who toured European capitals including Brussels last week, rejects the terms of Greece's bailout programme that peg loans to painful economic reforms and budget cuts.
But Juncker said in Germany on Monday that "he must not assume that the overall mood in Europe has changed so much that the eurozone will unconditionally adopt the government programme of Tsipras". He also said he did not expect any new deal on Athens' demands to be reached at an EU summit in Brussels on Thursday. "I'm assuming that there will be debate about this at the European Council, but I don't expect that we will reach any final agreements there," Juncker told reporters at a meeting of Germany's Social Democratic Party near Berlin.
