Indrika Ratwatte, Representative of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) called on KP Governor Sardar Mahtab Ahmad Khan here on Friday at Governor House and discussed matters pertaining to the Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Jacques Franguin, Head of UNHCR sub-office Peshawar was also present.
The Governor welcomed Indrika Ratwatte and appreciated the UNHCR's engagement with Pakistan over return of Afghan refugees to homeland. The Governor said that if successful repatriation of Afghan refugees will be ensured and peace should be maintained in Afghanistan and Pakistan, it will resolve major problems of the region.
The Governor said that Pakistan shares multiple ethnic, religious and cultural commonalties with Afghanistan and the development of Afghanistan is in the best interest of Pakistan. The Governor reaffirmed government's commitment to the Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace and reconciliation process. He said that it is the most viable way to end violence and bring durable peace and stability in Afghanistan and the region.
The Governor urged the UNHCR and the international community for playing their role in creating conducive conditions for the early return of Afghan refugees from Pakistan. The Governor assured that Pakistan would continue to work with UNHCR, the Afghan government to ensure secure return of the refugees. Indrika Ratwatte expressed deep condolence on recent terrorist attacks in Pakistan.
