Punjab Agriculture Minister Dr Farrukh Javed has said the provincial government has achieved all its agricultural production targets this year. He said there is dire need to adjust agricultural practices with the rapidly changing global climate.
"We are focusing on providing best profit to our farmers now," he mentioned.
He said, "The chief minister green road project will help farmers to link with markets and cities easily and an amount of Rs 15 billion is allocated to the project this year and we will spend Rs 50 billion on the project next year. The government is trying to reduce the input cost of farmers so that our agriculture sector grows."
He stated this before the inauguration of an Agriculture Expo where American Council General Zachary Harkenrider, State Bank's representative Syed Samar Husnian, Fatima Group Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Zahir and Agriculture Extension Director General Dr Anjum Ali were also present.
He visited different stalls in the exhibition and praised the efforts to train the farmers about the latest developments in the sector and told reporters that the government is giving a subsidy of Rs 22 billion to the farmers to provide low-priced electricity at a flat rate of 10.35 per unit.
"We have introduced 15 new verities of BT cotton and our new hybrid maize seed is available in market at just Rs 2,500 which is far less than the prices of multinationals. We are going to see a sweat revolution in the Potohar region because of the Agriculture department's efforts in the irrigation project. We have to ensure our food security in ever growing population," he added.
The minister also said stakeholders should come together to develop the agriculture sector.
We are going for a record export of kinnow, mango and potato this year because of the efforts of our farmers and the Agriculture department, he said.
