Suki Kinari Hydropower Project (SKHPP) is a Run-of-the-River project located in Kaghan Valley, District Mansehra at a Distance of 265 Km from the Islamabad. Several Feasibility studies on SKHPP were conducted by Montreal Engineering (1984), NESPAK (1992) and by GTZ of Germany (1995). Finally, SKHPP was advertised by Private Power Infrastructure Board (PPIB) as part of 7 Raw Hydropower Sites in March 2005 for implementation in the private sector. The Project was awarded to SK Hydro Consortium under a transparent process of International Competitive Bidding (ICB) under Power Policy 2002.
Mott MacDonald International carry out the feasibility study for the Project which was approved by the POE on 15th April 2008. The study envisaged that SKHPP will have a contract capacity of 840 MW HPPP, and generate 2958 GWh electricity annually. The Project includes construction of a reservoir, underground powerhouse with 4 Pelton turbines, generators and allied equipment, diversion & intake structure.
The Kunhar River originates in Pakistan and culminates in Pakistan with no international interference. The project is designated as a high head scheme with a design head of 900 meters and a tunnel length of around 19 km. High head projects are generally considered one of the most cost effective hydropower schemes. There is very little displacement of local inhabitants and no irrigation requirements are envisaged.
The development of the Project is well advanced and the IA, WUA, PPA and land Lease agreements have been negotiated and executed with financial close and construction start expected soon.
