The Indus River System Authority has allocated 71.26 MAF water to provinces for sowing and growing Kharif crops from 1st April to 30th September 2015. Punjab Irrigation consultant Eng. M.H. Siddiqui told Business Recorder here on Friday that there would be no shortage of water for early sowing of cotton, rice and sugarcane in the months of April and May this year.
He said the IRSA's advisory committee comprising senior officers of Punjab, Sindh, KPK and Balochistan has unanimously approved water quota of all provinces for the Kharif season in accordance with their share of water under the 1991 Water Apportionment Accord.
Siddiqui said that keeping in view weather forecasts of the Meteorological Department and snowfall over the mountains, the technical committee of the water regulatory body has estimated that 112 MAF water, 4 MAF more than the previous year, would be available for distribution among the provinces till 30th September.
Engineer Siddiqui said that all the provinces expressed satisfaction over the availability of required irrigation water in the months of April and May.
He said that IRSA has allocated 35.5 MAF water to Punjab, 32.3 MAF to Sindh and 3.38 MAF water to KPK and Balochistan.
The meeting also agreed to completely fill Terbella and Mangalla dams to ensure availability of enough water for sowing of Rabi crops starting from 1st October.
