The Milli Yakjehti Council (MYC) has rejected Islamabad High Court's verdict upholding death sentence handed down to Mumtaz Qadri for assassination of former Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer and said the verdict was contrary to teachings of Quran and Sunnah and violation of law of the land.
The working committee of the MYC met at JI's headquarters Mansoora, here on Monday to deliberate upon the court's verdict upholding death sentence and the prevailing situation in the Middle East with particular reference to Pakistan's position in the conflict.
The meeting was attended by leaders of various religious parties including Secretary General of Jamaat-i-Islami, Liaquat Baloch, Sahibzada Abual Khair Muhammad Zubair of JUP-Noorani, Allama Sajid Ali Naqvi, Allama Ibtsam Elahi Zaheer of Jamaat-e-Ahle-Hadith, Allama Ameen Shaheedi, Peer Mahfuz Mashhadi, Fareed Paracha, Assadullah Bhuttop, Syed Safdar Shah Gilani and other prominent religious leaders.
Later addressing a joint press conference Allama Abual Khair and Liaquat Baloch said the IHC verdict has made the blasphemy law ineffective, therefore MJC rejects the verdict. It has set up a panel of lawyers led by former Chief Justices of Lahore High Court Khwaja Muhammad Sharif and Nazeer Akhtar to file a review petition in the Supreme Court.
The MJC leaders said that they are also constituting a panel comprising all religious schools of thought to be a party in the case before the Supreme Court.
They called upon the government not to take a unilateral decision about sending troops to Saudi Arabia but leave this sensitive matter to the Parliament. Instead of becoming a party in the conflict, Pakistan should play the role of a mediator and try to extinguish the fire that has engulfed the entire Muslim Ummah, particularly the Middle Eastern countries.
