Balochistan High Court likely to get country’s first woman chief justice

Balochistan High Court (BHC) is likely to get country’s first woman chief justice, as Justice Syeda Tahira Safdar may become the chief justice after the retirement of existing Chief Justice Muhammad Noor Muskanzei, who is due to retire on August 31.

The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP), under the chairmanship of Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, have summoned a meeting on July 30. It may consider the appointment of Justice Syeda Tahira Safdar as the new Chief Justice of BHC, local media reported.

Besides having distinctions of the first lady appointed in all her posts, Justice Syeda Tahira Safdar was the first lady to be appointed as civil court judge and high court judge in Balochistan in 1982.

She was one of the three judges of the special court for trial of offence of high treason against former president retired General Parvaiz Musharaf by proclaiming the state of emergency on November 3, 2007. The special court constituted under Section 4 Criminal Law Amendment Act 1976.
