Farmers have begun sowing this year's grain maize crop in France, the European Union's largest producer, with 2 percent of the expected area sown by April 6, farm office FranceAgriMer said on Friday. The start of the maize (corn) sowing campaign was slower than last year when 10 percent of the crop had been put in the ground by the same date, weekly data from FranceAgriMer showed.
Earlier-sown cereals remain in good condition, the office said. For soft wheat, France's main grain crop, it estimated 91 percent of crops were good or excellent condition, unchanged on the previous week's rating. This was above 76 percent a year earlier and the highest reading for the period in five years.
Crop growth was generally behind the fast pace observed last year but above the average of recent years, the data showed.
