It is interesting to note that a high-level meeting chaired by prime minister Nawaz Sharif has decided to proactively promote conservation measures through early closure of shops, marriage halls and restaurants in Islamabad. According to a Business Recorder report, provincial governments will be apprised by the relevant federal ministers.
The news report, however, claims that Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal pointed out during the meeting that the time-line for the implementation of the decision had yet to be decided and this crucial decision was deferred till convening of another such meeting. The newspaper, in editorial comment, has rejected this measure on some plausible grounds. But the question is: what can you actually do when the power supply-demand gap is bound to widen during summer? The completion of power projects initiated by the government will take time. In the meantime, the situation does warrant the introduction of certain steps aimed at minimizing the number of loadshedding hours.
The government is therefore required to think outside the box. It must show great appreciation of this metaphor that means to think differently, unconventionally, or from a new perspective.
