Law-enforcement agency on Monday disclosed that a former chairman of Association of Builders and Developers of Pakistan (ABAD), Babar Chughtai, has been arrested because of his alleged involvement in criminal activities. According to details, Babar Chughtai, who was elected as chairman ABAD twice in 2002 & 2009, was picked up early Saturday morning from his Baloch Colony residence.
His arrest was made over his alleged funding to one of the city's political party, which the LEA believed was used for land grabbing, target-killings, extortion, etc.
When contacted, ABAD Chairman Junaid Talu refused to comment over the arrest of his predecessor, saying that a decision to issue an official statement in this regard would be taken at meeting of ABAD's members, scheduled to be convened on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, MQM Coordination Committee has strongly condemned the arrest of Chughtai, calling it a `a flagrant act of vindictiveness'.
Deploring that the arrest has been made on flimsy grounds that he had given a donation to MQM, it said that Chughtai is a prominent businessman and has played an important role for the development and progress of Karachi in his capacity as chairman ABAD.
"Whether it is illegal for any businessman to give a donation to any political or religious party and if there is no other businessmen in Pakistan who has not been giving donations to political parties at the time of elections or public meetings," the committee queried.
The committee said that the law-enforcement agency by arresting Chughtai has given a message to all the businessmen of the city not to have any relations with the MQM.
It asked President Mamnoon Hussain, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah whether the ongoing Karachi operation is aimed at eliminating terrorism and criminals from the city or to crush MQM.
