International workshop on Cultural Heritage, Archaeology of Pakistan inaugurated
A two-day international workshop on Cultural Heritage and Archaeology of Pakistan opened here on Thursday. German State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Professor Dr Maria Boehmer was the chief guest at the inaugural session of the workshop.
In her address, the German State Secretary reiterated her government's support for preservation, protection and development of database for the historical sites and antiques in Pakistan. She welcomed the Pakistani delegates and congratulated the organisers for holding this important workshop, which would provide an opportunity to experts and archaeologists to look into precious cultural heritage of Pakistan.
Sharmila Faruqui, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister, Sindh, on Culture, Tourism and Antiquities Department, while speaking on the occasion said that after the devolution of Culture, Tourism and Archaeology subjects to the provinces through 18th amendment in the Constitution, the Sindh government has taken a number of steps to preserve and protect the cultural heritage including important historical sites and land mark buildings in the province.
The province went on to develop three full-fledged directorates to take care of Archaeology, Conservation and Study of Heritage. Institute for the preservation of the Artifacts is being established in Thatta. It will take care of the research work as well focus on documenting the physical heritage and expanding heritage terrorism, she added.
