Former hockey Olympian and selector of Pakistan hockey team Arshad Chaudhry has died at the age of 65 years. Arshad remained an active hockey international player in the Pakistani national team from 1971 through 1976 and played as right half-back. He represented Pakistan in over 33 national and international matches.
He represented Pakistani men's hockey team, which participated in the 1975 third World Cup Hockey, held at Kuala Lumpur and won the Silver Medal. In 1976, he participated in the Pakistani Men's hockey in the 1976 Summer Olympics held at Montreal which won the Bronze Medal Arshad was born on April 10, 1950 in Faisalabad. He was son of Chaudhry Sadique Salar and the nephew of the world-renowned hockey legend of Pakistan, Chaudhry Ghulam Rasool.
Arshad did his BA from Government College Faisalabad where he was also the captain of college hockey team. He did MA in History from Punjab University Lahore in 1973. In 1975 he was selected Assistant Manager in PIA. Arshad Chaudhry was selected in the Punjab University Hockey team in 1971 for the Inter-Varsity Hockey Championship held at Karachi. The team won the Inter-Varsity Championship in the following year. Arshad was the cousin brother of Pakistani hockey legend Akhtar Rasool.
He retired from active hockey after the Montreal Olympics in 1976. Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has condoled the death of Arshad Chaudhry. He prayed for the departed soul and courage and strength to the bereaved family to bear the irreparable loss with fortitude. The Chief Minister also lauded the services of Arshad Chaudhry for the promotion of hockey in the country.
