Army Chief General Raheel Sharif Monday reached Moscow on a three-day official visit. A smartly turned out contingents presented him guard of honour. According to ISPR, national anthem was played by Russian Army in honour of General Raheel Sharif who laid floral wreath on the memorial of unidentified army officers. During the tour, he will hold meetings with military and political leadership of Russia.
Defence sources said that both sides would hold discussions on procurement of Russian made 4 Mi-35 Assault Helicopter, besides discussing bilateral and regional issues. Russia had approved a deal to sell a batch of Mil Mi-35 'Hind E' heavy attack helicopters to Pakistan, Russian ambassador told Radio Pakistan on November 12, 2014. This is a big breakthrough for Pakistan as Russia has decided to ignore India's pressure and proceeding to carry out the deal with Pakistan.
At present, the Pakistan Army is relying in part on Mil Mi-17 'Hip' helicopters in its military campaign against the Taliban in the North Waziristan region. Analysts said the Pakistan Army, which is the defence forces' main helicopter operator, has chosen the Mi-35 because of previous satisfaction with Russian helicopters notably the Mi-17.
