New AI predicts person’s personality by tracking their eyes
It is rightly said that eyes tell a story, as scientists have created a new Artificial Intelligence that can predict human’s personality through their eyes.
The phrase saying eyes as the window to soul might be made true as scientists from different universities across the globe used machine learning to help understand people’s eye movements and relate them to predicting their personality types.
As per Science Daily, the new technology can identify four of the ‘Big Five’ basic personality traits that are conscientiousness, agreeableness, neuroticism, and extroversion, leaving to the only trait it cannot judge, openness to experience.
Eye movements of 42 participants were tracked, via eye-tracking headsets, as they carried along with their everyday tasks. Researchers point out that these findings could enhance how humans and machines interact and once a machine can interpret what a person is like, it can also act accordingly. Researchers said that these findings can provide more natural responses than if they were in lab, since they are carried out in real-world environments.
“People are always looking for improved, personalized services,” said lead researcher of the global team, Tobias Loetscher. “There’s certainly the potential for these findings to improve human-machine interactions. This research provides opportunities to develop robots and computers so that they can become more natural, and better at interpreting human social signals.”
Some of the personality traits related to eye movements as outlined in the report state that when people look around more, they are curious. When the eyes stare at abstract images for longer time periods, it indicates that they are open-minded. When the eyes are blinked faster, this signs for the person being neurotic.
Similarly, move their eyes from side-to-side more lead to the person being open to new experiences. Having greater pupil size changes mean more conscientiousness, and spending less time looking at negative emotional things compared to people who are pessimistic represent the person being optimistic.
However, this should be noted that these eye movement patterns are not determinants for these character traits, but are only tendencies that the researchers found had a correlation, reported Mashable.
