The Ministry of Climate Change has notified a heat-wave probe committee on the directions of the Federal minister for Climate Change, which will delve into the causes of heat-wave spell in the country, particularly in Karachi. Former Director General of Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) Dr Qamar-uz-Zaman Chaudhry has been selected as convenor of the committee named 'Expert Study and Investigative Group' which comprises former director-general of PMD, said a press release issued here on Monday.
The probe committee comprises Director General of the PMD Dr Ghulam Rasul, Member (Disaster Risk Reduction) at the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Ahmad Kamal, Head of Climatology at the Global Change Impact Study Centre Islamabad Shahbaz Mahmood, Director-General National Health Emergency Preparedness of the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Co-ordination Munir Ahmad Mangrio, one representative each from provincial disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs).
"The heat wave probe committee will analyse and investigate the main causes of recent heat wave in the country, especially in Karachi; propose ways and means to tackle these kinds of incidents in future, develop strategy for institutional capacity-building and awareness-raising, formulate comprehensive report/recommendations to enhance understanding and capacity to respond to the similar situations," said Federal Minister for Climate Change Mushahidullah Khan. The group would formulate its recommendations and submit its report to Federal Minister for Climate Change Mushahidullah Khan not later than two weeks.
