Over 163,000 still in relief camps: devastating floods displace 1 million people

Devastating floods have forced nearly one million people to evacuate their homes across the country of which over 163,000 flood victims are still in relief camps. According to National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) the recent floods so far have affected adversely over 1.3 million people, killed 182, and injured 124 in 3,306 villages across the country as well as destroyed/ damaged more than 12,000 houses.
According to authorities concerned so far a total 182 people have lost their lives of which 23 in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), 6 in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), 7 in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), 48 in Punjab, 16 in Balochistan and 82 deaths have been reported in worst flood hit Khyber Pakhtunkhawa.
Flash floods forced 9400,000 people to evacuate their homes and take shelter in government built up shelters and relief centers. To facilitate the flood victims the authorities have set up 790 relief camps wherein at present 163,382 people have taken shelter.
The authorities have evacuated over162, 638 people from flood hit areas of Punjab, 677,581 Sindh and 1,736 from GB. In Punjab over 17,500 people are in relief camps and 108,024 in Sindh. To facilitate the flood hit people the government has set up 381 relief camps in Sindh, 394 Punjab, 8 KP and 6 in GB.
According to data issued by the NDMA, 124 people injured in the floods of which 34 in Balochistan, 68 KP, 8 Punjab, 5 AJ&K, 6 GB and 3 in FATA. Out of 12,170 houses destroyed/damaged by floods, 939 have been reported in Balochistan, 3,544 in KP, 6,163 in Punjab, 323 in AJ&K, 812 in GB, 389 in FATA, while the government of Sindh is still assessing the damages to the houses.
Total 3,306 villages have been devastated by floods of which 548 in Punjab, 2,436 in Sindh, 17 in AJ&K, 286 in GB, 19 in FATA while PDMA KP and Balochistan are compiling the data regarding devastated villages.
About 74,000 tents have been provided to the flood victims. Other relief goods include 4,758 tons of ration, 1500 tarpaulins and 8941 blankets, 124 tons of mineral water and 700,000 aqua tabs for water purification.
The authorities have advised the people of the Indus river beds living in Layyah, Dera Ghazi Khan and Muzaffargarh to shift to safer places.
According to authorities, river Indus is flowing in high flood in Layyah, Dera Ghazi Khan and Muzaffargarh districts as water flow has crossed 511,000 cusecs at Taunsa barrage.
On Monday the flash flood has hit the tehsils of Karor Lal Esan, Layyah, Taunsa, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu and Kot Chutta where the river bed areas are almost inundated.
The areas of Layyah, Dera Ghazi Khan, Muzaffargarh and Rajanpur will face high flood during the two to three days.
River embankments and safety states in these four districts are being monitored while the army, rescue departments and other relevant departments are also busy in the relief and rescue activities.
Meanwhile, construction of boat-bridge is under way in Layyah to replace the bridge Khonun which has been damaged by the floodwater and the traffic will be restored within 24 hours at the site.
