The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has launched an inquiry against illegal cutting of trees in the premises of US Embassy in Islamabad for the ongoing expansion work. Ramzan Sajjid, the spokesman for the civic body said that the authority had received a letter from US Embassy, requesting a no-objection certificate (NOC) for cutting of some trees as the expansion work is underway.
"The US embassy letter is still under process and the relevant department of the CDA has not yet issued any NOC in this regard," he said. A few days ago, he said that the ICT Police confiscated a truck loaded with Trees, chopped from the premises of US embassy, in the limits of Secretariat police station.
"The police took the truck and driver into custody after they failed to produce NOC," he said. Sajjid said that when the CDA came to know about the incident, it immediately sent its officials to the site to determine how many trees were chopped from the premises of US embassy as well as to find out whether the trees were cut down by the contractor or on the orders of the US embassy officials.
He said that the authority also sent a letter to the US embassy seeking more details of the incident. "Strict action will be taken against those who were found responsible for illegal cutting of trees from the premises of US embassy," he said. A police official of Secretariat police station said that police confiscated a truck loaded with trees after coming out from diplomatic enclave and shifted the truck and driver to the police station. He said that the truck driver was released after his friends produced a receipt of fine of Rs 30,000 to police issued by the CDA environment department.
