The first indigenously prepared drone was used to attack a terrorist compound in restive North Waziristan Agency (NWA), successfully killing at least three high-profile militants. Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement here that for the first time, Pakistan-made Burraq drone on Monday hit a terrorist compound in Shawal valley, killing three high-profile terrorists.
The remotely-piloted aircraft Burraq and laser-guided missile 'Burq' were tested in March. Military declared it had successfully armed an ingeniously-produced drone with a laser-guided missile. But until now, the weapon had never been used in combat. The Burraq was displayed in military parade this year to mark the country's national day. Pakistan has sought to develop its own drone program for years, and displayed a drone meant solely for surveillance in 2012. After this strike, Pakistan has joined club of eight nations, including the US, UK and Israel, to have successfully used a remote-controlled aircraft to strike terrorists.
