The Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) has constituted a two-member committee to investigate an accident at a blast furnace plant on Wednesday, which left one employee dead and two others injured. The committee comprising DCE/Incharge (PP&C) Syed Musharaf Hussain and SE/Incharge(AS&GN) Nazir Ahmed Qazi will submit its report soon. PSM spokesman Shazim Akhter, in a statement on Thursday, said that the accident happened during maintenance work at Blast Furnace-2.
He said that Deputy Manager Muhammad Hafeez, Trainee Engineer Ahsan Ali and a skilled worker, Ali Raza, were injured in the accident. They were immediately shifted to hospital, where Muhammad Hafeez succumbed to his injuries. However, Ahsan Ali and Ali Raza were discharged after treatment. Giving details, he said that the PSM has formulated a plan to maintain all the complexes units and machinery due to decrease in gas pressure.
"Likewise maintenance work was being carried out at Blast Furnace-2. For this purpose hatch of BF-2 was opened to inspect the inner portion of the furnace but suddenly hot air with dust exhausted with great speed towards the engineers and workers working on it.
"The engineers and workers got panicked and lost balance and fell on the ground causing serious injury to Deputy Manager Muhammad Hafeez, and minor injury to Ahsan Ali, Trainee Engineer and Ali Raza, skilled worker, who were immediately shifted to Hospital.
"Later on Ahsan Ali and Ali Raza were discharged but unfortunately Muhammad Hafeez succumbed to his injuries." He said that before carrying out the inspection of BF-2 all the precautionary measures were taken as per Standard Operating Procedure (SOP). He further said that "BF-2, Charging Equipment and Inspection Window" are in working condition.
