After getting directives from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Higher Education Commission (HEC) has constituted a four-member committee to resolve Bahauddin Zakriya University (BZU) issue within 15 days. Chairman HEC Dr Mukhtar Ahmad while addressing a press conference has said that some universities are lacking legal requirements however a circular will be issued on Wednesday (today) to all public and private universities to fulfil the shortcomings within 90 day.
In case of failure, action according to the law would be taken, he added. He further said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has directed to resolve BZU issue, while keeping in view three points including safeguard of students' future, according to law and not compromising on quality.
He further said that HEC has no enforcement power to close a university; however it reports to concerned authorities and give its recommendations. There are around 11 private universities, which were repeatedly asked to fulfil the requirements, but failed. It is pertinent to note that students of BZU, Lahore campus held a demonstration at Canal Road demanding affiliation of their campus with HEC. They said the varsity administration charged hefty fee from them for different disciplines but the campus was not legal because it was not affiliated with HEC. They urged the respective authorities to protect their two academic years and get the campus affiliated with HEC.
