Federal Minister for Planning and National Reforms Professor Ahsan Iqbal on Thursday said that Pakistan wanted an atmosphere of peace and stability in the region for the sake of economic prosperity and development. He was talking to the media here after attending the 11th convocation of the University of Management and Technology (UMT).
Punjab Governor Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana, who is Patron of the University, was the chief guest of the convocation while Federal Minister of Planning, National Reforms and Development Ahsan Iqbal, Ex-chairman Senate Pakistan Muhammad Mian Soomro, US Consul General Lahore Zachary Harkenrider and Rector UMT Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad were also present in the convocation.
Addressing the Convocation, federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal said it was a matter of immense pleasure for him to be at UMT and sharing his views with the students and faculty. He also said that present government had succeeded in improving law and order situation, recovering economy and reducing sever power crisis. Ahsan expressed his hope that further 10,000-megawatt electricity would be produced by 2018 whereas China-Pakistan Economic Corridor would bring a number of opportunities and prosperity in the country. The Minister laid stress on the graduates to support the vision 2025 that aimed at placing Pakistan among top 25 economies of the world.
Governor Punjab Malik Muhammad Rafique Rajwana while addressing the Convocation congratulated all graduates and their parents. He said UMT is one of the finest institutions that were building positive image of the country. He said he had visited many universities located in the province and found Pakistani students possessing excellent skills and abilities that could be used for the betterment of the country.
The governor said that trustworthiness, honesty, integrity and loyalty were the only principles that would upgrade us as a nation. Rajwana said the government at federal and provincial level had introduced both short and long term reforms and various projects making youth entrepreneurs and empowering them. Later on, he gave away degrees, prizes and medals.
In his inaugural speech, Rector UMT Professor Dr Hasan Sohaib Murad welcomed the audience and congratulated degree holders and their parents. He said UMT started its journey of knowledge in 1991 and today it was an unconquerable reality because of its groundbreaking research and quality education. He said it was quite challenging to transform UMT into a general category university but now this task was over and we were looking for internalisation for which a set up in Dubai and Ankara had already been initiated.
Dr Hasan termed UMT students as 'global graduates' who met all requirements that are found in the students of European and American universities. The Rector mentioned successful arrange of various conferences recently held at the University premises on the themes of business, management, economics, Islamic Banking, engineering and mathematics. He also talked about Faran Awais Butt, one of UMT professors becoming US Patent. Dr Murad emphasised the graduates not to stop the process of learning throughout their professional careers, as learning was oxygen for life.
Around 959 Bachelor, 364 Masters, and 3 PhDs degrees were awarded to the students by UMT's fourteen different schools and institutes. Besides, 47 Patron's medals, 45 Rector's medals, 7 special medals, 10 extracurricular medals and 5 awards of exceptional academic excellence and cash prizes were given away among the winners. This year only 9 students succeeded in securing Dr AQ Khan Award for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.
