Karachi Metropolitan Corporation is actively considering a proposal to punish all those playing havoc with the health of the citizens by selling inferior quality food items in the metropolis. KMC's director (Regulation & Quality Control) Dr Riazuddin Khan said while discussing the issue of substandard and inferior quality food items with the Consumers Association of Pakistan's (CAP) chairman Kaukab Iqbal. KMC's deputy director KMC Muhammad Irfan was also present.
He said that that though the KMC Food Department regularly test samples of food items being sold in the city, the number of food inspectors required to launch a similar campaign in every nook and cranny of the metropolis was insufficient.
Elaborating, he said that the samples of food items which are generally tested to ascertain their quality include spices, cold drinks, bakery items, ketchups, sweets, etc. The KMC official also informed the CAP chief that efforts are under way to establish Sindh Food Authority to monitor the quality of food items being sold in the province.
The CAP chief on this occasion suggested that all those selling inferior quality food items at the cost of public health should be heavily fined. He appealed to Sindh government to expedite the process of establishing Sindh Food Authority.
