Vice Chancellor LUMHS Professor Noshad A Shaikh inaugurated four Pre- Conference Workshops at Liaquat University of Medical & Health Sciences Jamshoro on Tuesday. The workshops were arranged by the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics LUMHS under the Chair of Professor Roshan Ara Kazi, as a part of "1st International Conference of Obstetrics & Gynecology" scheduled on 25th-26th December 2015 at LUMHS Jamshoro.
Addressing the participants of a workshop on "Emergency Obstetrics & Neonatal Care" Professor Noshad A Shaikh expressed that more than 500,000 women die of pregnancy related conditions, and an estimated four million newborns die, each year globally. Yet nearly all of those life-threatening conditions can be addressed effectively with safe low tech interventions by skilled providers at peripheral health center and district hospital levels.
This workshop describes key technical and programmatic considerations in the implementation of those life saving interventions especially for the Health Professionals working in the rural areas of the country. Chairperson, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology LUMHS Professor Roshan Ara Kazi expressed that about 15 percent of women develops complications during pregnancy or after giving birth, leading to the deaths of millions of women and newborns each year whereas millions more are disabled. The vast majority of these deaths and disabilities are avoidable. While most life threatening complications during pregnancy and childbirth cannot be predicted or prevented, nearly all can be successfully treated with effective, timely emergency obstetric and newborn care.
She added that women in high income countries have had access to "Emergency Obstetrics & Neonatal Care" services for decades. But in developing countries, where 99 percent of the world's maternal deaths occur, health systems are often too weak to provide such care. Professor Roshan Ara Kazi informed that the University is celebrating a full week with effect from 21st to 26th December 2015 to promote "Women Health" in the country, two workshops on "Research Methodology" and "Basic Gynecological Laparoscopic Training" has already been conducted on 21st December 2015.
Professor Raheel Sikandar and Dr Shabana Junejo from United Kingdom shared their knowledge & experience with the participants of the workshop Earlier, the Vice Chancellor inaugurated workshops on "Communication Skills" "Medical Writing" and a Hands-On Workshop on "VVF and Difficult Hysterectomy".
