Parkinson's disease: operations through modern method of DBS big achievement: adviser

Advisor to Chief Minister Punjab on Health, Kh Salman Rafique has said that 20 successful operations in Parkinson through a modern method of deep brain stimulation in a year is a big achievement of Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood, Principal Post Graduate Medical Institute and surgeons of Lahore General Hospital.
He said that launching of website www.dbspakistan.com for the provision of information about the DBS method of treatment to medical experts and general public will not only be useful for such patients but will also be helpful in starting medical tourism in Pakistan.
He said this while inaugurating website about the DBS treatment method at PGMI, here Friday. Salman Rafique said health and education have special importance in the priorities of provincial government and all possible funds are being provided for the research about modern treatment method. Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood has created a new challenge for his counterparts by launching a unique website in government sector.
Medical Superintendent General Hospital, Capt Niaz Ahmed (R), Assistant Professor Dr Shahid Mukhtar, AMS Dr Shahid Mayo and other doctors were also present on the occasion.
Advisor on Health said this function is unique of its kind for us all that for the first time in the history of the country that a doctor has set a new tradition by uploading all kind of information about modern treatment method at website, by launching of this website, the name of Principal PGMI Dr Khalid Mahmood and General Hospital will be written in golden words in the history of medical profession.
Salman said that Punjab government is paying special attention to the provision of modern treatment facilities and uplift of health sector, under the Chief Minister Health Sector Roadmap Programme, 700 basic health units have been upgraded to the modern centers of treatment where facility of 24 hours labour room has been provided.
He said comprehensive steps have been taken for ensuring presence of specialist doctors, availability of medicines and provision of necessary medical equipments at district and tehsil headquarters hospitals.
Principal PGMI and AMC Professor Dr Khalid Mahmood said that spreading research and experiences for the modern treatment method of the diseases causing threats to human health is a great service.
He said launching of website is aimed at benefiting from experiences of each other for the treatment and further promoting this tradition. He stressed the need of creating maximum awareness among the people about the preventive measures; people associated with medical profession should take regular steps in this regard.
Talking to media Kh Salman said that about one ten million rupees are being spent on DBS procedure abroad but Professor Khalid Mahmood and his surgeons have facilitated the patients in Pakistan by ensuring such operations at one fourth expense at LGH. DBS procedures of a number of patients were conducted through financial assistance by Chief Minister Punjab and now they are living a better life.
